The Wright Move by Barack Obama

Until yesterday, Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama has a potential millstone tied to his neck and threatening to cripple his campaign if not downright sink it. That millstone was Barack’s former pastor and a person who played a role big or small in his spiritual upbringing. As most people know and have seen, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the man in question made several inflammatory remarks about the United States, her government and on the issue of race; some with credence such as social injustice in the nation’s history and others that were just ridiculous.

Now, if the most outrageous statements that I have made over my short life and even in the eight and a half years that I have been serving God were looped in short 30 second intervals, I would probably be ostracized by many. I believe that is certainly what happened with the play of the issue in the media when this first broke in March. That said, if that were the case for me, I would like to believe that there would be some repentance on my part if my inaccurate and inflammatory statements clearly wounded people (a common occurrence in my life I might add). Instead over the past few days, Rev. Wright seemingly sort to exploit the attention to further his own personal ventures at the expense of the effect on his church and a friend in Barack Obama who stood by him in light of the statements that were made.

When Barack gave his reverting speech on race in the United States last month in Philadelphia, I applauded the fact that he refused calls to disown his former pastor choosing instead to separate himself from the remarks and give Wright the benefit of doubt that he was grossly mischaracterized based on 30 seconds of the worst things he has said. Former Republican Presidential Candidate and Baptist Pastor Mike Huckabee even came out to his defense citing the era in which Wright grew up in, the sixties where racial tensions and divisions were unlike anything I have ever or probably will ever face. There was a personal element to it for me. I am close to my Pastor and he has helped shaped the person I am today and will be tomorrow and while my pastor might unintentionally create laugh lines for a couple of my friends (you know who you are) with his command of the English language, that is a far cry from the Black Liberation Gospel that Wright subscribed to.

Don’t get me wrong, the church is supposed to stand up and advanced the message of the bible and not adhere to all the practices of our culture. We are called to be in the world but not of it and certainly what is preached goes to that effect but not to preserve a culture that is outside the kingdom of God. In essence, from the leadership down, we strive to protect and enhance kingdom culture wherever we go. I have laughed with my pastor concerning this issue and the prospect that I may someday want to venture into the public eye and that he should watch what he says. But the truth is that I know him and he is a man of character and someone that I can follow now and 30 years from now regardless of whatever position I might be in society, be it a janitor or the CEO of a large corporation.

Back to Rev. Wright, it is clear that with his performances and antics over the past few days, that he was unrepentant for what he said and further yet, he showed no sensitivity to Obama’s campaign and what it was striving to do i.e. lift the conversation of race from one that preyed on hatred to one which found a way for us to begin to close a dirty chapter in this nations history.

For now, it seems like the breakup is complete. It saddens me that it had to come to this. I believe that this is emotionally one of the hardest things that Barack Obama has had to do in his political career but sometimes, the hardest thing to do and the right to are the same…in this case, this was the Wright thing to do.

Rant 2…Hard to go Green without Green

I was inspired by a reader to continue my rant on the issue of going green or for people who don’t understand the lingo, using less energy and taking care of the environment. The same argument could also lend itself to getting people to eat healthy and a host of other issues but for now, let’s talk about being green.

First of all, I would like to say that I am one of the suckers that does believe in global warming and that man does play a role as a catalyst to this effect. How big a role? I am really not that sure but I believe it is a big enough role that it does tip the scales. For those who aren’t believers, I suppose you have a right to your opinion but I would say this…what a man sows, he will reap and it is hard to make the argument that the constant increase of CO2 and his bitter cousin carbon-monoxide can’t possibly be without consequence and a prime example is the smog you see in large cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas, two cities that I have driven into with a rude shock as to how dirty the air is. At the very least, if we take care of the environment which God has blessed us with and global warming is a fallacy, what do we lose? However, if we continue at this pace, and we destroy irreparably our environment, it is our kids and their kids that pay the price.

Now all that said, I think the governments of the world (yes, not just the United States) and corporations as well as individual citizens all need to be a part of the effort. It doesn’t have to be this uber inconveniencing effort and it could potentially be very rewarding to all there parties involved in the long run. How? Well, for the companies, new revenue stream, for the government, the ability to create new jobs and for the citizens, well, new jobs and the feel good aspect of it. Governments should invest in small businesses that are working on developing these new technologies that reduce dependence on non-renewable sources of energy using tax incentives and protecting their intellectual property better than they are right now. Big corporations should make it financial feasible for customers to actually consider green alternatives. For example, don’t make the hybrid car significantly more expensive than its less fuel efficient counterpart. Don’t charge significantly more for the more energy efficient bulbs when you don’t have to.

I know what the corporate excuse will be…”we are trying to recoup our investment.” Well, that maybe the case but do you not realize that people will buy more if you make your prices more reasonable? Also, you have a case now of cheaply made fakes coming from places like China and that hurts your brand. Don’t charge people to recycle…period. It makes no sense and at that point you are appealing to the “decent nature” of people and listen, they want to help but in hard economic times, no one cares more about being green than getting or keeping more green. Well, this is starting to seem more like a term paper than a blog so I think I will end there.

Before I am done, a word to fellow citizens considering going green, do some research and you will discover amazing things that you can do to cut both the cost of going green and increase the value. Energy efficient light bulbs are great but so it making sure you use less power but turning off everything that doesn’t need to be on. Just a thought and certainly something I need to do more of everyday.

Yesterday was Earth Day...Today, I have a Rant albeit a small one

Yesterday was Earth and of course everyone and their pets get to be conservationist for one day...from Network Stations making their logos green to Web Portals greening out their homepages to (here is my favorite) everyone I pay a bill to asking me to go with "paperless billing." Okay, that is where I draw the line. Yeah, I am centrist and I believe in the environment and I believe we should take care of what has been entrusted with...but here is the problem- None of these companies care enough for the environment care enough to make it worth our while.

What do I mean? They care more about their bottom line than they do about the environment otherwise they would give me an incentive to go paperless...i.e. they would take less paper from me. Seriously, if each of these companies would offer me what it costs them to send me the "papered bill" off my phone bill or bank statement or what other bill they send to me, I would gladly go paperless. Maybe we could share the cost? Meet me half way and lets call it what it is..."SAVING MONEY" not being Green. That's right, at this stage of my life, I care more about saving green than being green. Sometimes, being green (while I believe it is a worthy cause) costs average customers too much green.

This doesn't just apply to billing companies but to the food industry...you want to eat healthy, you have to pay a premium and again, another worthy cause that may cost average consumers too much. Anyway, back to my original point...any "biller" who wants me to go paperless must agree to take less coin.

200th Post...on this particular blog anyway.

Like the title says, this is my 200th blog on this forum anyway but I am sure I have rambled collectively more than 200 times online. No specific rhyme or reason for this post other than me rambling about life in general. So lets get to the highlights...

The University of Kansas just won the NCAA Basketball Championship almost a week ago. I am a fan and my bracket chose them although I didn't win the unofficial pool on facebook...that honor sadly goes to Obi. I did pick the final correctly which he can't boast of. Anyway, it was great the share that victory with many friends. I would talk more about the game but heh, I don't want to.

Another thing of note...I will be a candidate for the CPA exam starting this summer. I know, it is crazy and I don't know what I am thinking. I planned on taking it earlier this year but lets say work got in the way. I am not worried, at least not yet. I know one thing for sure is that I am going NEED GOD to pass. I am planning a small vacation to Florida before I start studying so that should be my calm before the storm. I am going to for sure need a lot of prayers.

As a church, the topics of evangelism and miracles are focuses now and I think they should always be. I think those two issues are critical marks of the call of God on any Christian. I wish I was well versed in both. The common denominator is faith and the bible does call us to live by faith. However, faith often feels like the most elusive part of Christianity. It is not impossible. I think it is key to understand it is through, by and for Jesus i.e. living by faith. I have been reading through the book of Romans and Paul really addresses the issues that we face with failure...we forget that we are in the plan of God. We forget that we have bought into what he is doing not the other way round. We forget that are foot soilders here to carry out his strategy and we are not to be overtly concerned with the strategy but we are to obey. If we have this attitude, we will lose heart less often because it leaves the burden on Jesus.

Well, that's it for me...don't forget to tip your waitresses.

Bed Ridden- 10 Things I am Currently Thinking

It is my second day of being bed ridden due to flu and strep. I had recently bragged at work how I had never missed a day of work due to sickness...well, that streak is over. That said, here is the latest issue of little segment I like to call "10 Things I am currently Thinking"

1. I would really love to see what the earth looks like from the moon and I don't mean pictures. I would like to see it for myself but that probably won't happen.

2. I am wondering if God just wanted to give me a couple of days off. I mean, it is a rough way to take it but I have actually got some much needed rest the past 32 hours.

3. Gas prices are mean

4. I am turning into my father when it comes to what I watch on TV...he watched a lot of CNN while I grew up...I watch a ton of MSNBC. Yikes!

5. This past winter was brutal...but don't I always say that?

6. Blogging is starting to be quite popular among my social circle...strange. I hate to say I was ahead of the movement. Who am I kidding? I have been ahead of the movement.

7. Accounting stinks...so 2 days away from it has actually been nice.

8. Wikipedia's running list of today's April Fool's Day jokes have been entertaining. Check them out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_1%2C_2008.

9. I may go driving for a few minutes just to say I left the house today.

10. I am grateful for friends like Justin Newman who brought me some Chicken Totilla soup for lunch!

No Room for Independents

I try to be independent but that doesn't sell. I am moderate...I am a socially conservative evangelical who does care about the environment, war and poverty. But this election cycle has increased my frustration with both parties to an unprecedented level. I want to beat up every (yes, you too Colmes) talking head because (not only are they idiotic), they make me start to despise Republicans...problem is that MOST of my closest friends are true Republicans.

I look to the Democrats and they don't make it easier especially with the Media's obsession with anything that feeds the stereotypes about race and religion. That Democrats can't see that Hillary is willing to say and do anything for the nomination baffles me and increases my distrust in any Democrat's ability to be nothing but the left wing Republican party engaging in the same dirty tactics under a different logo including dragging the most positive campaign through the mud for a few extra votes.

Sometimes, I want to cash in my chips and say, "Well, it was fun while it lasted." But the stakes are too high and I am too tired to watch silently as hope slowly dissipates. Everyone demonizes the next guy including engaging in pure lies...but for what, so that we can be here again in 4 years, 8, 12. Meanwhile, the world is moving on and waiting on this country to get it together.

Each of us needs to open ours eyes and see that the true enemy is us...we are the ones standing in our way and none of our hands are clean...and it will never be as long as we keep buying the same naratives that partisan politicians have been selling for the last 5 decades.

Blog Relocation

Due to unforced peer pressure, I have decided to move my blog to www.myspace.com/ugoxls. I am sorry if this causes any inconvenience. I guess I am more loyal to my friends than a blog location. I look forward to hosting you there.

Baltimore Is Named America's Fittest City - And Chicago is now the Fattest

Baltimore Is Named America's Fittest City - Yahoo! News

Well, looks like Baltimore is now number one and Seatle, winners last time has dropped to #8. They probably got complacent because if thier results last year. I still wonder how they calculate these.

Happy Anniversary my Dear old Blog!!!

Well, I can't believe it...I just can't believe I was able to keep a blog for a whole year. Talk about commitment to something. I surprised myself really with this one. Anyway, for all of you that have paid any attention whatsoever to the blog, you are my inspiration. Thank You.

- Top 100 names of 2005- Lets see if Jacob is back at number one

- Top 100 names of 2005

Well, there is good news! Jacob which does mean deciever is not the top name for 2005. Jacob came in second to none other than Aidan. Aidan? What the heck does that mean? Hold on, let me check...Well, Aidan is an Irish name meaning Fiery. On the girl's side, Emma held on strong and still remains as the most popular name for the second year in a row.

Why am I talking about this? I am not sure. I think it is because of I mentioned it last year.

Texas on top in the end - NCAA Football - That is one Prediction in the Bag

Texas on top in the end - NCAA Football - Yahoo! Sports

Not sure who all saw that game but the Texas/USC game last night was (along with the Miami/Ohio State game 2003) the best College Football game that I have ever seen. Oh my was that exciting. Anyway, that was one prediction that I made that actually happened. I never thought that the game could have ever lived up to the hype but it by far did and Vince Young is a stud- 467 yrds of total offence including 200 yrds on the ground and 3 TDs. The next question is...No, it is not should I enter the draft because no way he is coming back. The next question will be do I get an Escalade now or a H2.

Predictions Sure to go Wrong in 2006

This is touchy stuff but make sure you focus on the title here. These predictions are about anything and everything I can think of right now. These are predictions sure to go wrong and in no order either

17. Nokia will come out with a phone that also doubles as a dishwasher
18. Someone will tell me, "I told you so."
19. I will finally balk the trend and wear strip shirts more than 4 times this year
20. All these predictions will go wrong.

Thank you very much. I'll be here all week.

Happy New Year to you all!...6 years and counting

Don't have much time so I will get right to it. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! That goes to all of you out there whether you have been naughty or nice, saint or sinner, skinny or skinnier. This is a great time of the year. Time to make changes or try to anyway. I wish you all the best in the changes that you choose to make. Hopefully they are godly changes that require sacrfice because you will better for it. It is also time to avoid the YMCA...oh yeah. That place is like a Theme park with just one rollarcoster on a holiday weekend. Yeah, just the other day, I saw a teenage girl beating up on old lady to get on the treadmill. Ok, that was a bad joke. Anyway, just wanted all of you out there to know that I love you even though it is 2006 and Jesus loves you more.

Today also makes it 6 years that I have been in Pittsburg, KS. Thats right, 6 freaking awesome years. I have no idea what my life would be if I had not made the decision to come here. 6 very trying years but 6 of the very best of my life. That means this is the 7th year which is kinda scary because many believe that 7 is the number of completion but I most definately hope it is not my last here. In fact, I will just say it, I will be here past my 7th year as long as God wills. I have so many fond memories of being here even with some of you guys that read this blog and I hope you have fond memories of my being here as well. If not, let me know and we will make some memories.

That all said, I really want to thank you all deeply for all that you guys have been to me since I rolled into town. I know it is not always pleasant to have to deal with me but if anyone can, you guys can. I look forward to another awesome year with all of you and that includes all at Covenant Harvest and that sphere of influence. May God give you all your heart's desires that are in line with His will this year.

Book Update

Before I go into the topic that led to the title, I will talk a bit of what has been going on in the world...my point of view that is. In order word, I just want to talk like I always seem to do. Christmas was good. Spent it with friends and family and sometimes they are one and the same thing. My cousin who lived with us for a while growing who is more like a sister came to visit us for the first time. It was her first time out of the NY/NJ area and boy did Pittsburg, KS look like the moon to her. She is back in her corner of the world and apparently doing fine.

This week at work has been relatively relaxed but it is more like the calm before the storm. My world is about to get busier and my boss basically said to me today, do well and you can renegotiate your contract, flop and you are out of the door. Not like there is any pressure here or anything but oh well. Weather has been nice and I mean between the 50's and high 60's and no I am not kidding. But most of it was spent indoors and I know I missed a golfing opportunity this week. I do have the day off tomorrow to make ammends should the weather hold up.

Now to the book. I have in my opinion anyway done the outline but for some reason, I am getting less and less optimistic about how the book will turn out. I guess my goal really is to just get published and maybe sell 100 copies mostly to friends and family. My goal is to be done with the book by the end of the summer and 3 people so far have soft committed to help me write it.

What else...well, like I mentioned, next week Friday will be this blog's one year anniversary. Might not be a big deal to anyone but it kinda is to me because I never thought that I would keep it up. Sure I diverted away from News commentary and moved to more of my personal life but hey, I had to go with what the people wanted.

Finally if I do not get the opportunity to write to you guys one more time before the year runs out, I want wish all of you a tremendous year ahead and God Bless you. If you don't know Christ, find someone who does and ask them to introduce Him to you. Make Knowing Him your New Year's Resolution. If you know Him and don't have a church you call your, make that you New Year's Resolution and stick to it like white on rice. It would be the best decision you make all year and possibly for rest of your life.

Next time I come to you, I will maybe post "Predictions sure to go wrong for 2006" both on a personal level and one a National or perhaps entertaining level.

So long good fellas.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Folks, it has been a while. I just want to take this opportunity to look back at this year and also say Merry Christmas to everyone that reads or has at any point in the last year peaked at this blog. I am pretty sure that my life is not as exciting as some of you but wow, it has been quite a year so far. Funny thing is that day by day based on the struggles that we go through or that I go through anyway, it is tough to see the hand of God working. But take a step back and review and those of you who know Christ can see that God has been awesome, wonderful and spectacular to say the least. I am in no way speaking about material things although Christ says in the bible that you should seek him first and everything else will be added unto you.

FYI: This blog will be a year old on January 6th which I believe is a Friday.

Anyway, several highlights of my person life this year

-Made a questionable decision to consider going to get a Ph.D
-Went to London in March for Spring Break which was Awesome
-Obeyed God and made the decision to cancel all plans after graduation that included me leaving town
-Was a mess after that but God showed up
-Graduated graduate school with a Master in Business Administration and a Concerntration in Accounting from Pittsburg State University (Friday May 13)
-Brother (Obi) graduated with a Bachelors in Nursing
-Got a job in town (a mighty fine job might I add); Like I said, God showed up
-Obi got a job too
-Added to more states to my collection of states been in (Total of 32 now)
-Purchased my favourite car (not as big a deal but certainly a highlight)
-Became a home owner with my brother (Scary stuff)
-Close friend, Ryan got married- was the BEST MAN
-Close friend, Josh got married- was a Grooms Man
-Won a 42" Phillips HDTV with DirecTV HD Service for a year
-Made 2 trips to Nigeria on Business
-Friend and Golf buddy Justin, made it back from Iraq safe and sound
-Continued in my quest to help build the church while doing all of this

So, see, not the most exciting life but thrilling enough. I am sure next year has its own trials and victories and possibily its own defeats. But in all things give thanks to God. And to all my friends and family that have supported me through this year, Thank You and Merry Christmas.

Its the most Wonderful time of the Year...Or is it?

You've all heard the songs and maybe even hummed to the tune. But whatever it is, whoever sang that song was probably under the influence of something. I don't mean to be Scrooge-like but the only and I mean ONLY reason why this can be the most wonderful time of the year is if we recognize Christ as Lord and Saviour because otherwise, it is the most Nightmarish time of the year. I mean think about it...doesn't it feel like you work and save money all through the year to blow it over Christmas and then some? Then you spend the first half of the year trying to payoff the balance on your Credit Card as a result of all the spending and overspending.

Oh and it gets better. It is cold outside and heating bills are going up and so is your weight because you spend more time eating especially since all the food taste so good now. When the year turns around, we have to start making Resolutions to loose weight and thus the YMCA becomes so congested.

Christmas day then becomes like a beauty pagent because every relative is trying to one-up the other on whose year has been better or sometime we begin to compete on who has had the suckier year. Thats the season for you if you don't know Christ. Presents? You get presents on Christmas? Oh yeah, thats right you do. Which ones? The ones that may not fit you or the ones that are fun to store in the garage or the basement? Oh, those one who become re-gifted perhaps the next year? Yeah, you get gifts.

Ok enough of my soapbox. I guess I am just saying all this because I am getting broker and broker by the second and I don't like the commercial Christmas. Nope, I don't have problems buying gifts for people but it is just that everything around you makes it up about commerce and there is so much to it that people (even Christians) often over look.

I thank God that sent his son down to die for us. I thank him because that is the greatest Christmas anyone can ever ask for and receive. Yes, the gift of Salvation...the only gift that keeps on giving. Its the only gift that doesn't get judged by the size or commercial value. It is the only gift that lasts till the next Christmas and beyond. It is also the only gift you can take with you to your grave.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Nigerian Airlines Grounded After Crashes - Yahoo! News

Nigerian Airlines Grounded After Crashes - Yahoo! News

I debated talking about this because it happened so close to me in a way and also because I am not fond of talking about bad news. Last weekend, a there was a plane crash in my home country. There were approximatly 110 aboard including about 70 children. There was only one survivor. Basically the news saddened my heart all week. This is the third plan clash in the country in the last 2 months. The first happened while I was there in October. All 117 people on board died. While the news is gravely distressing, it has hightened awareness for the need a stronger regulated aviation industry in Nigeria. The President has stepped up and is actually rather actively in trying to make sure that the maintenance standards are on par with that of other western countries.

For more details on this news, feel free to visit the news link above.

One more picture of Ayo and I. Hard to beleive that I have known this guy for over 12 years and we did not grow up together. Posted by Picasa

This is a picture of my office. It is bland and tasteless but that is okay. Oh, FYI, I am moving offices over Christmas. I was told yesterday.  Posted by Picasa
